Guaza de Campos
Village
Guaza de Campos is a village in the Palencia part of Tierra de Campos, already documented in the year 963, when Ferdinandus Avol Haceves donated some possessions to the monastery of Sahagún. It belonged to the Order of Santiago from 1199 until Charles I sold it in 1542 to Pedro de Zúñiga, Marquis of Águila-Vente, after which it joined the lordship of the Duke of Abrantes until the Peninsular War. In the Middle Ages it had a rammed-earth wall, whose last gate, that of Santa Ana, was demolished in August 1999. It preserves the parish church of la Asunción, a neoclassical work from the late 18th century designed by Manuel Turrillo, with an image attributed to Pedro Berruguete. In 1842 it had 676 residents; today it has around fifty-five inhabitants.
