Villarramiel
Village
Villarramiel is a town in the province of Palencia, in the Tierra de Campos region, with 782 inhabitants according to the 2025 register. It was founded around the mid-10th century by the Alavese nobleman Herramel Álvarez who, having taken refuge at the Leonese court after clashing with his stepfather Count Fernán González, received lands from King Sancho I which he resettled under the name of Villa Herramel. It has long been distinguished by its tanning activity, a privilege recognised by the Catholic Monarchs, and it joined with men and money in the revolt of the Comunidades de Castilla. In 1592 Philip II created the marquisate of Frechilla and Villarramiel from its territory. Also famous for its cecina, in 1776 the collapse of the tower during the Candelas festivities caused more than a hundred deaths, and it preserves sixteen dovecotes.
