Gatón de Campos
Village
Gatón de Campos is a municipality of barely 46 inhabitants on the middle bank of the río Sequillo, in Tierra de Campos, Valladolid. It was a crown town until King Ferdinand IV granted it to Alfonso de la Cerda, son of the infante Fernando de la Cerda; turned into a lordship of the House of la Cerda, it passed to Mafalda de la Cerda, a descendant of Alfonso X the Wise, married to Fernán Gutiérrez de Valverde, whose descendants kept the surname Valverde de la Cerda here; one of her granddaughters married Vasco Porcallo de Figueroa, conquistador and settler of Cuba. When the lordships were abolished in 1813, it became an independent municipality. Its church of San Pedro, Gothic-Mudéjar of the 15th-16th centuries, preserves a star-patterned alfarje ceiling beneath the choir and crowns its tower with a frieze of balls.
