Capillas
Village
Capillas is a village in the province of Palencia with around seventy inhabitants, in the Tierra de Campos comarca, documented in 916 as Fonte de Capela, one of the first settlements repopulated in the region. It was a fief of the bishops of León, who walled it; of that wall a pointed arch survives in the town hall building. It once had as many as five churches and, in the 18th century, one of the most important hospitals in the comarca, of which only the columns of its chapel remain. In the 1842 census it had 765 residents. It preserves the Mudejar church of San Agustín, whose main chapel was laid out in 1584 by the stonemason Juan de la Cuesta; it holds the first Iberian organ, built by Tadeo Ortega in 1776, and pieces from the vanished churches, among them a sculpture by Juan de Juni.
