Medina de Rioseco
Village
Medina de Rioseco is a city in Tierra de Campos, in Valladolid, with around 4,600 inhabitants (INE 2025), on the right bank of the río Sequillo, a tributary of the Valderaduey, and crossed by the Way of St. James from Madrid. It holds the titles of most noble and most loyal and is known as the Ciudad de los Almirantes and the Vieja India Chica. Its oldest remains go back to the Iron Age and the Celtiberian period; its name, Medina (from Arabic, "the city"), may date from the 9th-10th centuries, settled by people from the Asturian-Leonese kingdom and Andalusi Mozarabs. Its arcaded streets, declared a Conjunto Histórico-Artístico in 1965 (a Spanish heritage protection category for historic ensembles), and several monumental churches surround the Canal de Castilla, which reached it in 1849. Its Holy Week holds the designation of Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (Spain's highest distinction for festivities of tourist interest).
