Belmonte de Campos
Village
Belmonte de Campos is a hamlet in the province of Palencia which, on the fall of the Ancien Régime, became a municipality of the Frechilla district, when the 1842 census counted 22 households and 114 inhabitants. Its main heritage asset is the 15th- and 16th-century castle, which belonged to the Sarmiento family and later to Inés de Guzmán, lady of Villalba de los Alcores and Fuensaldaña; it preserves its keep and the remains of an enclosure entered through a gate guarded by a circular turret. Declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Historic-Artistic Monument, a former Spanish heritage-protection designation) in 1931, it was on Hispania Nostra's Red List of heritage between 2008 and 2021, the year it moved to the Green List. The hamlet, at 758 metres above sea level, has gone from 223 inhabitants in 1910 to fewer than thirty today.
