Valverde de Campos
Village
Valverde de Campos is a town in the province of Valladolid (Castilla y León), in the Tierra de Campos comarca and on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid, whose name comes from «valle verde de Campos» (green valley of Campos). In 1063, during the transfer of the remains of Saint Isidore of Seville from Seville to León, the saint's body rested in this village, carried by King Ferdinand I and his three sons barefoot and on their shoulders, a journey to which tradition attributes several miracles; in 1176 a Cistercian monastery was founded here, moved in 1190 to Santa María de Benavides. With about 90 inhabitants, it preserves the church of Santa María, from the 16th century, and a casa-palacio of the same century, which belonged to the Enríquez family, admirals of Castilla, and which was later transformed by the marquis of Monreal.
