What to see and do in Villanueva de San Mancio

Villanueva de San Mancio
Village
Villanueva de San Mancio is a municipality of around 96 inhabitants in the province of Valladolid, at 744 metres above sea level, which was a town under ecclesiastical lordship and one of the richest priories of the monastery of Sahagún, with a history documented since the 11th century. Its church of Santa María, from the 16th century, was the temple of a former Benedictine monastery — the Monasterio de San Mancio, demolished in the mid-19th century after the disentailment — and keeps on its main altar the relics of San Mancio, a martyr from the Portuguese city of Évora. Its bell tower is unique in the region, square at the base and turning octagonal, and the interior, a single 17-metre nave, is covered with star vaults and gilded baroque altars. On the outskirts stands the chapel of the Humilladero.
