Palazuelo de Vedija
Village
Palazuelo de Vedija is a municipality in Tierra de Campos, in Valladolid, 10 kilometres from Medina de Rioseco; in the 19th century it had 872 inhabitants, and today has around 164, far from the 1,197 of 1900. It was formerly a place of behetría (a lordship whose vassals freely chose their lord), and in the 14th century it was part of the Infantazgo de Valladolid as a manorial estate of Diego Pérez Sarmiento, at odds since 1354 with King Pedro I of Castile; later it was a lordship of the Marquis of Alcañices. The constable Álvaro de Luna took prisoner here the adelantado (royal governor) of Galicia, Diego Sarmiento. The village preserves a spring of ferruginous waters, formerly mineromedicinal, now off-limits. Of its four churches only that of Nuestra Señora del Barruelo survives, and of the vineyards that phylloxera ravaged in the early 20th century barely more than the wine cellars of many houses remain.
