Villaescusa de Roa
Village
Villaescusa de Roa is a hamlet of 95 inhabitants in the comarca of La Ribera, in the province of Burgos, ten kilometres from Roa, whose Tierra it was once part of: in the 1591 Census of Vecindarios of the Crown of Castile, that community numbered 1569 vecinos pecheros, of whom 563 belonged to the capital. Local tradition holds that the name comes from its being a town that always made excuses not to pay taxes. In the mid-19th century it had 148 recorded inhabitants. Its patronal festival, in honour of San Mamés Martyr, to whom the village church is dedicated, is celebrated around 20 August.
