Villabáñez
Village
Villabáñez is a municipality of the Tierra de Pinares, in the province of Valladolid, with around 515 inhabitants, of gentle relief amid plains, farmland and pine woods. Its name comes, according to tradition, from a founder called Bañez, who arrived in the 8th century during the Reconquest. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Merindad del Infantazgo de Valladolid, described in the Becerro de las Behetrías of 1351. From 1931 it experienced social tension over the management of the communal woodlands, between day labourers, organised in the Casa del Pueblo, and landowners of the local priest's Asociación Católica de Obreros. Its church of the Asunción, Gothic-Renaissance with a stone tower, replaced a ruined Romanesque temple and houses an altarpiece by Gregorio Fernández.
