What to see and do in Villanueva de los Infantes

Villanueva de los Infantes
Village
Villanueva de los Infantes is a hamlet of 116 inhabitants in the Páramos del Esgueva comarca, in the province of Valladolid, which had barely 94 inhabitants in the mid-19th century. Its parish church of Santa María la Mayor, from the 15th century, preserves frescoes from that period, among them a Last Supper, as well as several sculptures and a 17th-century altarpiece. On 8 September its patroness, the Virgen de la Torrecilla, is carried in procession to the sound of bagpipes and to the dancing of the Castilian jota, after which the Salve is sung and a Castilian vermouth is celebrated; the first week of August hosts a cultural and gastronomic week, and on the first Sunday of September, a popular cross-country race followed by hot chocolate and churros.

Monument

The pilgrimage of the Virgen de la Torrecilla
Activity
On 8 September the feast of the Virgen de la Torrecilla is held, with mass and a procession accompanied by dulzaina and Castilian jota dancing; the village rounds off the calendar with a fun run at the beginning of September.
The slope of the Esgueva at Villanueva
Nature
The houses hang down the flank of a steep slope on the right bank of the Esgueva, at 738 metres; above extend moorlands of poor soil and below the plain, the only really productive ground of the municipal district.
