What to see and do in Campaspero

Campaspero
Village
Campaspero is a town in the province of Valladolid, in the comarca of Campo de Peñafiel, halfway between Peñafiel and the Segovian town of Cuéllar. It sits on a limestone base more than thirty metres thick, on the páramo known as los altos de la Mula, and at 919 metres above sea level it is the highest town in the province. It was a simple hamlet, possibly founded in the 11th century during the resettlement of the Duero valley entrusted to Pedro Ansúrez, until in the 18th century it underwent a spectacular boom that renewed the village with a new church, that of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, built in 1757 with stone from its own quarries. With 1001 inhabitants, it is known for its limestone rock, used in buildings across Spain, and for roast lechazo churro.
Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán
Monument
The church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in Campaspero (Valladolid) was completed around 1760 using limestone from quarries in the municipality itself, replacing the medieval church, of which only the transept survives, dated 1560 and standing opposite the present-day parish church. The works, promoted by the parish priest Francisco Julián de las Monjas, began in late 1757 and were concentrated in 1758 and 1759; Campaspero did not need financial help from the diocese to pay for them, a sign of the standing the town had reached. It is a single-nave church, very elongated, of six bays, covered with a lunette barrel vault; the transept is topped with a small dome and a round-arched triumphal arch. The main altarpiece was carved in 1765 by Antonio Bentosa, of Sepúlveda.
The limestone quarries of Campaspero
Curiosity
Campaspero limestone is a white, compact limestone of sedimentary origin formed in the Turolian, between nine and five million years ago, quarried in this village in the province of Valladolid. It was used to build, among other buildings, Peñafiel Castle, Valladolid Cathedral, San Pablo de Valladolid, the façade of the University of Valladolid and Cuéllar Castle, as well as numerous parish churches in the area; the quarries even attracted stonemasons from Galicia and the Basque Country. Nine of the province's eleven active quarries are worked here, and since 2014 the village has had a stone museum. It is a rock suited to both sculpture and construction, in which gastropod fossils are frequently found.
