What to see and do in Torrescárcela

Torrescárcela
Village
Torrescárcela is a municipality in the Campo de Peñafiel area, in the province of Valladolid, which includes the hamlet of Aldealbar and has 162 inhabitants. It lies at the foot of the slope above the valley of the Valcorba stream, at 883 metres above sea level; although it is 42 kilometres from Valladolid, by proximity and history its capital was always Cuéllar, whose Comunidad de Villa y Tierra it has belonged to since ancient times, within the sexmo of Valcorba. It is part of the pine forest area of stone pine and resin pine, whose resin was once a source of wealth, and its economy remains agricultural, on dry land. Its name would evoke an old medieval fort, tower-prison (torre-cárcel). It celebrates its festivals on the first Saturday of May, in honour of the Holy Cross, and on 6 and 7 August, in honour of the child saints Justus and Pastor.

Nature
At 883 metres and with some 500 millimetres of rain a year, the municipal district alternates woods of black and resin pine with dry cereal farming, on the edge where the Campo de Peñafiel looks out over the Tierra de Pinares.

Curiosity
Tradition derives it from a medieval tower-prison, though some argue that the place name is earlier than the Muslim invasion. The municipal coat of arms bears a tower of four storeys crowned by a cross.
