The limestone quarries of Campaspero Curiosity · Campaspero, Campo de Peñafiel, Valladolid Campaspero limestone is a white, compact limestone of sedimentary origin formed in the Turolian, between nine and five million years ago, quarried in this village in the province of Valladolid. It was used to build, among other buildings, Peñafiel Castle, Valladolid Cathedral, San Pablo de Valladolid, the façade of the University of Valladolid and Cuéllar Castle, as well as numerous parish churches in the area; the quarries even attracted stonemasons from Galicia and the Basque Country. Nine of the province's eleven active quarries are worked here, and since 2014 the village has had a stone museum. It is a rock suited to both sculpture and construction, in which gastropod fossils are frequently found. Photo: Nicolás Pérez (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Campaspero
