What to see and do in Fompedraza

Fompedraza
Village
Fompedraza is a hamlet of 113 inhabitants in the comarca of Campo de Peñafiel, resettled alongside Roa (913) and Sepúlveda (941) in the 10th century, according to the historian Tomás Mañanes. Its church, dedicated to San Bartolomé Apóstol, is of late Romanesque origin and has been rebuilt several times; no other building of interest suggests the village was ever more than a small settlement on an inhospitable páramo, given over for centuries to sheep grazing. Polished Neolithic axes turned up in its orchards, which locals called «thunder stones». In 1447 Fompedraza broke away from Peñafiel as one of the so-called «villas eximidas», though it kept the right to sell its wine in the town; it later passed to the house of Osuna.

Monument
A late Romanesque fabric raised in the twelfth century, it is the oldest building in the village. In its fields polished axes have also appeared that place the occupation of the municipal district already in the Neolithic.
Fompedraza, an exempted town
Historical milestone
Prince Enrique separated the hamlet that year from the jurisdiction of Peñafiel and turned it into an exempt villa. Afterwards it passed through several noble houses, among them that of Osuna, until the abolition of seigneurial rights in 1811.
