What to see and do in Trigueros del Valle

Trigueros del Valle
Village
Trigueros del Valle is a village in the Campiña del Pisuerga, in Valladolid, with 320 inhabitants, in a valley of wheat fields that gave the municipality its name, 11 kilometres from Cigales and 27 from the provincial capital. Its stone and adobe houses stand at the foot of the late medieval castle of Trigueros del Valle, and the town is the head of the Cigales Designation of Origin. The original settlement stood on the hill now presided over by the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, with a 10th-century Mozarabic horseshoe arch; once the Muslim threat had passed, it moved down into the valley, where the Romanesque church of San Miguel was built in the late 12th century. It received a charter in 1092 from countess Ildonza González, and in 1427 was a lordship of the Robles family. In July it holds busy medieval festivals.
Castle of Trigueros del Valle
Monument
It was built in the 15th century by the Robles family, with two walled enclosures of which stables, towers and the main gate survive, the gate bearing the date 1453 carved on its lintel. In 1427 John II granted Fernán Alfonso de Robles the privilege of founding an entailed estate with the town of Trigueros and its valley, though he was imprisoned that same year and executed three years later for betraying the constable Álvaro de Luna. The lordship was inherited by his son Gutierre de Robles, who together with his wife María de Guevara carried out the main works on the castle, whose coats of arms appear over the gate next to the carved date. The lords' despotism led to the townspeople's assault on the castle on 16 January 1521, during the anti-seigneurial revolt of the War of the Comunidades, an episode re-enacted every summer.
Church of San Miguel Arcángel de Trigueros
Monument
A late Romanesque church built in two phases at the end of the twelfth century, of a single nave with a barrel vault. In the side chapels, added in the fifteenth century, are the tombs of the lords of the castle.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo
Monument
The hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo crowns the highest point of Trigueros del Valle (Valladolid), on a hill riddled with caves that served as old rock-cut hermitages and were inhabited until the mid-20th century. The doorway retains a horseshoe arch of Mozarabic design dated to the 10th century, with a small relief of a plant motif set into the lintel; its dedication and the fortified look of the hill recall the castle that originally occupied the site. In July 2011 Gothic mural paintings from the 13th century, still under study, were found beneath the plaster, and scattered remains of an old stone Way of the Cross survive in the surrounding area.
The charter of Trigueros
Historical milestone
Countess Ildonza González granted in 1092 a settlement charter to the place, which was a behetría (village free to choose its lord). At the end of the 12th century the houses came down from the fortified hill to the valley floor, where they are today.
The rosé of Trigueros del Valle
Food and drink
The municipality, at 757 metres and twenty-seven kilometres from the capital, is part of the Cigales designation of origin, whose bled rosés are made by mixing tinta del país with white grapes of the district.
