What to see and do in Cubillas de Santa Marta

Cubillas de Santa Marta
Village
Cubillas de Santa Marta is a village of 394 inhabitants in the Campiña del Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, attached to the Cigales Designation of Origin. It sits beside the Canal de Castilla, where it preserves lock number 39, with its stone bridge, and the lock-keeper's house; the Pisuerga river also crosses it. The area is flat except for a páramo to the north. The church of Santa María, Cistercian and from the 13th century, houses an Allen organ with four thousand digitised pipes, three keyboards and a hundred and fifty stops. The village preserves traditional wine cellars and cave houses dug into the páramo's slope, as well as a wash house and traditional fountains.
Church of Santa María de Cubillas
Monument
A thirteenth-century fabric of Cistercian lines, sober and of ashlar, which presides over a village of 23.55 square kilometres at 765 metres of altitude, on the bank of the Pisuerga and beside the Canal de Castilla.
The Canal de Castilla and lock 39
Nature
The canal crosses the municipal district and here is lock number 39 of the branch, beside the bank of the Pisuerga that serves as the boundary with the neighbouring villages in a flat landscape of poplar groves and irrigated land.
The 1860 railway station
Curiosity
The arrival of the train in 1860 gave the village a station of its own that for a century was its gateway to the outside, beside the Canal de Castilla and a handful of traditional cellars dug into the hillside.
The cultural week of Santa Marta
Activity
Around 29 July the village unfolds a week of pilgrimage festivals, tastings and cultural events devoted to its titular saint, which adds to the festivities of San Isidro, San Antonio de Padua and San Pedro.
