Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo Monument · Trigueros del Valle, Campiña del Pisuerga, Valladolid The hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo crowns the highest point of Trigueros del Valle (Valladolid), on a hill riddled with caves that served as old rock-cut hermitages and were inhabited until the mid-20th century. The doorway retains a horseshoe arch of Mozarabic design dated to the 10th century, with a small relief of a plant motif set into the lintel; its dedication and the fortified look of the hill recall the castle that originally occupied the site. In July 2011 Gothic mural paintings from the 13th century, still under study, were found beneath the plaster, and scattered remains of an old stone Way of the Cross survive in the surrounding area.
