What to see and do in Zaratán

Zaratán
Village
Zaratán is a town in the comarca of the Campiña del Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, adjoining the city of Valladolid itself, from which it is only six kilometres away, at the start of the Montes Torozos; it has 6.386 inhabitants, compared with the 924 recorded in the mid-19th century. Its name may come from the Arabic çaratan, “river crab”, or from sarita, “cord”, after an old rope-making workshop. From the time of Alfonso XI it belonged to the monastery of the Huelgas Reales, whose abbess held the lordship and civil jurisdiction with the title of marchioness of Zaratán. Between 2000 and 2010 it experienced growth of 274.64 %, the highest among the municipalities of Castile and León with more than 5.000 inhabitants. It celebrates the Octave of Corpus as its main festival.
Church of San Pedro Apóstol de Zaratán
Monument
A 17th-century church built in stone, with some sections of the tower in brick, of simple plan with three naves separated by square pillars, and a choir at the foot. It has a porch on the south side, its sloping roof resting on stone columns, and a main altarpiece from the early 18th century with 16th-century statues. It houses the Santo Cristo del Amparo, a life-size crucifix from around 1621 whose attribution to Gregorio Fernández was confirmed in 2008.
The 1599 cross and the inquisitor's house
Curiosity
A stone cross dated 1599 marks the site of the old wayside shrine, and in the built-up area the house of an officer of the Inquisition is preserved with the date 1748 carved on the façade.
The octave of Corpus Christi
Activity
The village's main festival, in June, brings out the monstrance and the banners of the brotherhoods and strings together eight nights of toasts by peñas, with bull-running through the streets of the old quarter.
The sausages of Zaratán
Food and drink
On 2 November the village devotes a festival to its fresh sausage, with artisan making in view of the public and regional dancing. It is the product with which the municipality is identified beyond its boundaries.
