What to see and do in Fuensaldaña

Fuensaldaña
Village
Fuensaldaña is a town in the Campiña del Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, only 7 kilometres from the provincial capital, between the countryside and the Montes Torozos, at 745 metres above sea level. According to tradition it was founded by the deity Endovélico, and as early as the 12th century the settlement, then called Fuent Saldania, began to build its first castle, occupied by the comuneros in 1520. The castle, from the 15th century and of the School of Valladolid, dominated the town with its imposing keep, topped by four cylindrical turrets, and was the seat of the Cortes of Castile and León. The parish church of San Cipriano, of 13th-century Gothic-Mudéjar origin, preserves a 17th-century plasterwork vault. With 2.146 inhabitants, its rosé wines are a hallmark of the DO Cigales.
Castle of Fuensaldaña
Monument
A fifteenth-century fortress of the so-called Valladolid school, with an imposing keep topped by cylindrical turrets and merlons. For decades it housed the seat of the Cortes of Castilla y León.
Church of San Cipriano de Fuensaldaña
Monument
The church of San Cipriano, the parish church of Fuensaldaña, was built in the 13th century in Gothic-Mudéjar style, with a pointed triumphal arch that merges with the nave, crowned by a four-tiered tower. It is reached by a staircase leading to a notable round-arched porch, added in the 16th century as shelter from harsh weather, which today serves as an atrium to the main entrance, opened by six arches, under a 17th-century plaster vault. Its altarpiece is Rococo in style, with numerous paintings and sculptures from between the 16th and 18th centuries.
The castle of Fuensaldaña in the Comuneros revolt
Monument
The comuneros occupied the fortress and named Pedro Cisneros as its governor. Decades later, Felipe II would reward the services in Flanders of Juan Pérez de Vivero by naming him first Count of Fuensaldaña.
The onion-skin coloured rosé
Food and drink
The village's rosé wine is distinguished by its onion-skin tone, obtained from vines descended from medieval plantings and from the American rootstocks replanted after phylloxera.
