What to see and do in Montejo de Tiermes

Montejo de Tiermes
Village
Montejo de Tiermes is a municipality in the province of Soria, in the southwest, near Segovia and Guadalajara, next to the Celtiberian-Roman site of Tiermes, an archaeological area since 1999, and its Romanesque hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Tiermes. It belonged to the Tierra de Ayllón until 1833, when it passed to Soria, and to the diocese of Sigüenza until 1957, later joining that of Osma. It was part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Ayllón, in the Sexmo de Valdeliceras, and progressively incorporated neighbouring areas such as Liceras or Carrascosa de Arriba, up to the final merger of 1967. Its land, flat and watered by the Pedro river, which tends to dry up in summer, is devoted to grain, legumes and pastures, in dehesas now protected. It has 134 inhabitants.
Tiermes, the city carved into the rock
Curiosity
The Celtiberian inhabitants carved their houses into the red sandstone of the hill, fitting dwellings one above another and joining them with stepped ramps. Even a tier of seating cut into the stone is preserved, of disputed function.
The Monographic Museum of Tiermes
Monument
The Tiermes Monographic Museum, located in Montejo de Tiermes (Soria) next to the archaeological site, is part of the Tiermes Site-Museum and is attached as a branch section to the Numantine Museum of Soria. It was created in 1983 and opened on 9 June 1986, in a building designed by Francisco de Gracia with a rectangular plan with perimeter columns and a reddish colour so as not to stand out in the landscape, which combines a 200-square-metre exhibition hall with a meeting area and accommodation for teams of up to 16 people. It brings together the materials unearthed in the excavations of the Celtiberian, Roman and medieval city of Tiermes: weapons, bronze ornaments and pottery from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, besides Roman remains and medieval pieces documenting the site's long life.
The Romanesque hermitage of Santa María de Tiermes
Monument
Next to the archaeological site of Tiermes (Montejo de Tiermes, Soria) stands this Romanesque church from the 12th century, with a single nave, a semicircular apse and a porticoed gallery on the south side; an inscription from 1182 bearing the name Domingo Martín is the only clue to its date of construction. It is the only standing building of the hamlet that succeeded the ancient city, depopulated in the 16th century, when the temple became a hermitage. Its portal shows archivolts with capitals depicting Adam and Eve beside the serpent and, on the other side, quadrupeds and a turbaned figure; the capitals of the gallery, with plant motifs, fantastic animals and biblical scenes, are the most notable feature. Today worship continues in summer and two pilgrimages are held, in May and October.
