What to see and do in Caracena

Caracena
Village
Caracena is a town of thirteen inhabitants in the province of Soria, in the comarca of Tierras del Burgo, situated on the left bank of the Caracena or Adante river, about 30 km south of El Burgo de Osma, through which the Ruta de la Lana passes. It preserves a castle and two churches, Santa María and San Pedro, as well as stretches of the 12th-century wall, the Romanesque Puente Cantos, the prison, the hospital for the poor, and a Baroque rollo dated 1738 in the middle of the square.
The fortified church of San Pedro
Monument
Founded in the twelfth century, it added to its function of worship a defensive role with thick walls and battlements. Its arcaded gallery and the sculpture of its capitals and corbels place it among the major pieces of Soria Romanesque.
The declaration of San Pedro as a national monument
Historical milestone
The church obtained in 1935 the category of Monumento Histórico-Artístico Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985), when the town that had been head of a community of twenty hamlets was already emptying: today its households do not reach fifteen.
The limestone massif of Caracena
Nature
The village sits on a limestone platform at almost 1,100 metres, in the south of the province and a step from Guadalajara. The cliffs cut by the river host rock-nesting raptors and close a landscape of páramo and holm oak wood.
