Liceras
Village
Liceras is a village of 49 inhabitants in the province of Soria, set on the slope of a hill that shelters it from the north, watered by the Pedro river, in the comarca of Tierras del Burgo. It belonged historically to the Tierra de Ayllón until 1833 and to the diocese of Sigüenza until 1957; in 1789 it had 259 inhabitants under the jurisdiction of the Marquis of Villena. Its land, with páramos rising above 1,300 metres, supports sheep and cattle farming alongside a flour mill, the Velázquez mill, driven by the Pedro river. The church of the Santa Cruz holds a Baroque altarpiece that reuses panels from an earlier Renaissance altarpiece attributed to Juan de Illana, and nearby stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Salceda, as well as a circular-plan caliphal watchtower of large sandstone ashlars.
