The Romanesque hermitage of Santa María de Tiermes Monument · Montejo de Tiermes, Tierras del Burgo, Soria Next to the archaeological site of Tiermes (Montejo de Tiermes, Soria) stands this Romanesque church from the 12th century, with a single nave, a semicircular apse and a porticoed gallery on the south side; an inscription from 1182 bearing the name Domingo Martín is the only clue to its date of construction. It is the only standing building of the hamlet that succeeded the ancient city, depopulated in the 16th century, when the temple became a hermitage. Its portal shows archivolts with capitals depicting Adam and Eve beside the serpent and, on the other side, quadrupeds and a turbaned figure; the capitals of the gallery, with plant motifs, fantastic animals and biblical scenes, are the most notable feature. Today worship continues in summer and two pilgrimages are held, in May and October. Photo: Discasto (CC BY-SA 3.0 es) What to see and do in Montejo de Tiermes
