Ayllón
Village
Ayllón is a town of about 1110 inhabitants in the north-east of the province of Segovia, near the boundaries with Guadalajara and Soria, between 950 and 1670 metres above sea level, between the Riaza valley and the sierra de Ayllón. Probably of Arevaci origin, it was destroyed by the Romans under the command of Marcus Fulvius Nobilior in the year 190 BC, and was resettled during the Arab occupation, first recorded, as Aellon, in 1076. It was the head of a community of town and land that stretched across villages of the present-day provinces of Segovia, Soria and Guadalajara; in 1202 Alfonso VIII granted the charter of Logroño there to Frías, and in 1337 it took in Eleanor, the dowager queen of Aragon, who had fled to Castile with her children. Since 1996 it has celebrated its Medieval Ayllón festival in July.
