What to see and do in Villanueva de Gormaz

Villanueva de Gormaz
Village
Villanueva de Gormaz is, with six inhabitants, the least populated municipality in Spain, tied with Torremochuela (Guadalajara). Situated in the province of Soria on a small rise beside the river Caracena, from where the mass of the fortress of Gormaz can be seen in the distance, it belonged after the Reconquest to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Gormaz, on which it depended until the 19th century. It holds a simple rural Romanesque church of San Pedro, with an alfiz of Muslim influence on its portal, and the hermitage of the Santo Cristo. It was a wine-growing village, as recalled by its three presses, now in ruins, and the cellars dug into the subsoil, which still serve as a meeting place even though agricultural activity is in clear decline.
