What to see and do in Muriel Viejo

Muriel Viejo
Village
Muriel Viejo is a hamlet of a little over seventy inhabitants in the Pinares district, whose name already appears in a document from 1088 kept in the archive of the cathedral of El Burgo de Osma, when the boundaries of the restored diocese of Osma were set; it is believed to have been founded before neighbouring Muriel de la Fuente, hence the surname Viejo. Tradition holds that Almanzor passed through here wounded on his way to Calatañazor, where he would suffer his final defeat. In 1787 it was recorded as the head town of the Merindad de Solpeña, with 223 inhabitants, and by the mid-19th century it had only 30 houses. The village sits in the river valley, surrounded by the peaks of La Lastra, San Vicente and Peñota, with oaks and pines on the slopes and sabina junipers on the summits.
The archivolt of the cemetery
Monument
At the entrance to the cemetery a Romanesque archivolt from the vanished medieval church has been reinstalled, with badly damaged capitals in which fantastic animals can still be made out.
The necropolis of Pico San Vicente
Nature
On this height of the municipal district a medieval necropolis was located, from which comes a magnificent stele deposited in the village church, documented for the first time in 1088 in the cathedral archives.
