What to see and do in Navaleno

Navaleno
Village
Navaleno is a town of about 700 inhabitants in the comarca of Pinares, province of Soria, traditionally devoted to the timber industry and heir to the Hermandad de la Cabaña Real de Carreteros (Royal Brotherhood of Wagoners) of Burgos and Soria, created in the 15th century under the Catholic Monarchs. Its extensive pine forests of black pine and Scots pine are one of the province's main mycological habitats, especially rich in saffron milk caps, highly prized in Catalan markets; around the feast of All Saints the Mycological Days are held, and since 2008 the Navaleno Mycological Centre has been in operation. Its church is dedicated to San Esteban Protomártir, and in January it re-enacts through the streets the theatrical feast of the Niño Jesús.
The Navaleno Mycological Centre
Activity
Opened in 2008, it maintains a permanent exhibition and courses on the fungi of the pine woods; around All Saints the village holds its mycological days with displays and tastings.
The Saffron Milk Cap of the Black Pine Forests
Food and drink
The Lactarius deliciosus gathered in these woods, called amizcle here, is the fungus of greatest economic weight in the comarca because of demand from the Catalan market, and thousands of kilos are picked every autumn.
The Porcini and the Yellow Knight Mushroom
Food and drink
The pine woods of the municipal district also yield Boletus edulis and pinophilus and the so-called seta de caballero, Tricholoma equestre, all of them of excellent culinary quality and highly prized on the market.
The Doctor Zhivago Station
Curiosity
A scene of David Lean's film was shot at the village's railway station, for which artificial snow had to be made in the middle of shooting: the film's Russian train really did pass through Soria.
The Planting of the May Pole
Activity
On the first of May the young men plant in the square a debarked pine brought from the woods, a spring rite completed by the carnivals and the cuarentenas that the children sing from house to house.
