What to see and do in Vadillo

Vadillo
Village
Vadillo is a hamlet in Soria of about 80 inhabitants, in the comarca of Pinares, at 1,098 metres above sea level, in a setting of great ecological and mycological richness. Visigothic tools were found within its municipal area, now held in the Numantine Museum, and in 13th-century documents it already appears cited as Vadellum, the period to which its church's Romanesque font belongs. In the Early Modern period it was part of the Cabaña Real de Carreteros (Royal Brotherhood of Wagoners) of the Burgos-Soria comarca. Its 17th-century church of the Nativity stands on a hillock on the outskirts and holds that Romanesque baptismal font and an 18th-century organ. Nearby, next to the hermitage of San Roque, the feast of la Caridad is celebrated on 16 August; before Lent the children go through the streets singing ballads, «las Cuarentenas».
The Church of the Natividad de Vadillo
Monument
Raised in the middle of the seventeenth century with three naves, it keeps a Baroque altarpiece, a Romanesque baptismal font reused from the earlier church and an eighteenth-century organ still in its tribune.
The carters of the Cabaña Real
Historical milestone
The village formed part of the Real Cabaña de Carreteros, the guild that transported timber, salt and grain across Castile; the census of 1787 places it under the jurisdiction of the Duke of Veragua with 130 inhabitants.
The Visigothic tools at the Museo Numantino
Curiosity
Tools of the Visigothic period appeared in the municipal district and are today kept in the Museo Numantino of Soria; thirteenth-century records call this place of the pine woods Vadellum.
