What to see and do in Muriel de la Fuente

Muriel de la Fuente
Village
Muriel de la Fuente is a hamlet in the Pinares district, in the province of Soria, situated at the foot of a hill, at 1,012 metres above sea level, next to the source of La Fuentona, the deepest sump in Spain, declared a Monumento Nacional (National Monument, a Spanish heritage designation) in the late 1990s. In the Maja cave, engravings and bone objects from the Early Bronze Age have been found. The landscape combines forests of white sabina juniper over the limestone plateau from which the spring flows, the vegetation of the Abión river gorge and pine forests on sandy ground. On the outskirts stands the Romanesque hermitage of the Virgen del Valle, from the mid-12th century, with a single nave, a straight presbytery and a drum apse. It has about fifty residents.
La Fuentona
Nature
A karstic spring situated in the districts of Muriel de la Fuente and Cabrejas del Pinar that gives rise to the Abión river and was declared a natural monument on 12 November 1998. It holds Spain's deepest sump: cave divers have descended in it to one hundred metres without yet reaching the end of the gallery. The protected site preserves faunal communities of singular rarity and karstic geological formations among the most extensive in the area. Around it two clearly distinct landscapes stand out: the gorge of the Abión, with abundant vegetation, and the hilltops, with rugged relief and panoramic views. It lies very close to Calatañazor and half an hour from the provincial capital, and the area has several rural tourism guesthouses.
The Hermitage of the Valle
Monument
A Romanesque chapel of the mid-twelfth century with a single nave, a straight presbytery and a drum apse, with a very plain southern doorway; its titular, the Virgen del Valle, is the patroness of the village.
The Maja Cave
Nature
In this cavity of the municipal district occupations of the Bronze Age dated between 2200 and 1900 before Christ have been documented, millennia before the name Murellum appeared in medieval records.
The Juniper Grove above the Spring
Nature
46% of the municipal district, some 520 hectares, belongs to the area of the Sabinares de la Sierra de Cabrejas, a moorland of Spanish juniper that crowns the cliffs from which the water of La Fuentona emerges.
