What to see and do in Casarejos

Casarejos
Village
Casarejos is a timber village in the Pinares district, in the province of Soria, with about 145 inhabitants, situated deep in the pine forest between El Burgo de Osma and San Leonardo de Yagüe, next to the canyon of the Lobos river, which forms the boundary with Santa María de las Hoyas. In the 1789 Floridablanca census it appeared under the seigneurial jurisdiction of the Duke of Veragua, with 349 inhabitants; in the 19th century it even had unexploited silver mines. Its festivities of San Ildefonso, from 22 to 25 January, open with the “iluminaria”, a bonfire lit in front of the church door after the eve's mass, a tradition used to let neighbouring villages know the festivities were beginning.
The Torcajón Sinkhole
Nature
The residents give this name to a notable sinkhole opened in the limestone ground of the municipal district, which also takes part in the Cañón del Río Lobos with 156 hectares and in a bird protection zone of 644.
The Stick Dance of San Ildefonso
Activity
From 22 to 25 January the village honours its patron with stick dances, processions and the handing out of the sobadillos, the traditional sweets made for the feast in the middle of winter.
The Unexploited Silver Mines
Curiosity
Nineteenth-century descriptions mention in the municipal district silver mines that were never worked; the village, already cited in eleventh-century documents, belonged for centuries to the council of San Leonardo.
