What to see and do in Trévago

Trévago
Village
Trévago is a hamlet in the province of Soria, in the district of the Moncayo, of very ancient origin, perhaps dating from the Celtic invasion around 700 BC, from which inscriptions in the Celtiberian language and arrowhead casting moulds survive. Already mentioned in 915, when the King of Navarre García Sánchez took Ágreda and its district from the Muslims, it was in the 11th century a frontier land between Castile, Navarre and Aragon. In its 16th-century Gothic church of the Asunción, the Baile de la Virgen, a dance of very ancient origin, is performed during the August festivities. Two kilometres away, on the foothills of the sierra del Madero, stands the baroque hermitage of the Virgen del Manzano. It now has 47 residents, against the 440 it had in the 1842 census.
The Church of the Asunción of Trévago
Monument
A Gothic church from the mid-16th century with an attached tower that dominates the townscape; it is the largest building in a municipality of twenty square kilometres and fewer than fifty inhabitants. The tower, of Berber origin and reused as a bell tower when the church was built in the late 12th or early 13th century, retains its upper battlements; almost square in plan and built of rubble masonry in the manner of rammed earth, it is entered from the first floor. The church, with a single nave ending in an eight-sided apse reached through a wide triumphal arch, was built and enlarged in several phases between the 15th and 18th centuries; its central nave, the oldest part, boasts star vaults with tiercerons decorated with studs and scenes of the Passion.
The Hermitage of the Virgen del Manzano
Monument
Raised between the end of the seventeenth century and the beginning of the eighteenth in Baroque style, it is the setting of the village's Marian devotion and the point at which its August festivities and its ritual dance begin.
The Dance of the Virgin
Activity
During the August festivities this ritual dance of very ancient origin is performed before the image of the patroness, one of the traditional choreographies preserved on the Soria side of the Moncayo.
