What to see and do in Matalebreras

Matalebreras
Village
Matalebreras is a municipality in the district of the Moncayo, in the province of Soria, which includes the settlement of Montenegro de Ágreda, incorporated in the mid-19th century. The terrain combines the sierra del Madero to the west, which rises above 1,400 metres and holds protected woods of Pyrenean oak and holm oak, with a flatter area to the east, watered by the río Manzano. It lives from cereal and flax farming and from sheep and pig farming. Its parish church of San Pedro Apóstol, of Gothic construction partly from the 16th century and partly from the 18th, has a high altar by Gabriel de Pinedo; beside it stands a ruined Mozarabic tower, along with three crested 17th- and 18th-century houses, a Celtiberian hillfort and a Roman bridge. It has 81 inhabitants.
The Church of San Pedro de Matalebreras
Monument
A Gothic fabric whose chapel and nave were raised in the sixteenth century and which received additions in the eighteenth; it preserves an altarpiece by Gabriel de Pinedo, one of the retable makers active in Renaissance Soria.
The Blazoned Houses and the Moorish Tower
Monument
The village keeps three armorial houses of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, one of them belonging to the Marquis of Velamazán, alongside the ruined remains of a Moorish tower that watched over the mountain crossing.
Celtic Hillfort, Roman Bridge and Wall
Nature
In the municipal district a Celtic settlement, a bridge of Roman workmanship and a stretch of medieval wall of Muslim origin all come together: three layers of history in a municipality that today has eighty inhabitants.
The Sierra del Madero
Nature
The municipality extends beneath this sierra that exceeds 1,400 metres, covered with oak, juniper and holm oak woods protected by the Natura 2000 Network, with deer, wild boar and partridge as characteristic fauna.
The Honey and Mushrooms of the Madero
Food and drink
The oak and holm oak woods of the Sierra del Madero give mushrooms in autumn and sustain apiaries that make use of the heather and thyme in flower, two woodland resources that supplement farm income.
