What to see and do in Cigudosa

Cigudosa
Village
Cigudosa is a municipality of fourteen inhabitants in the comarca of Tierras Altas, in the province of Soria, situated at only 735 metres of altitude, the lowest point in the whole province. It is bathed by the río Alhama, a tributary of the Ebro, on the border with La Rioja and south of the Atalaya Vieja and Cabezas sierras; a good part of its territory, 1,109 hectares, is protected as a Site of Community Interest Cigudosa-San Felices, and it also preserves deposits of copper and silver-bearing lead in the Viviente mine. Its church is dedicated to San Pedro Apóstol, and in the 1842 census the town had 49 households and 192 inhabitants.
The lowest-lying municipality in Soria
Curiosity
With its urban centre at 735 metres above sea level, Cigudosa is the municipality situated at the lowest altitude in the whole province, at the point where the river Alhama cuts in between cliffs on its way to the Ebro.
The church of San Pedro Apóstol
Monument
The village's parish church, accompanied in the municipal district by a hermitage dedicated to San Baudelio the martyr; both served a population that in 1842 was around two hundred households and today does not reach fifteen.
The Viviente mine
Curiosity
Nineteenth-century descriptions of the municipal district cite deposits of copper and of argentiferous lead in the Viviente mine, alongside flour mills and charcoal kilns that completed the village's economy.
The Cigudosa-San Felices protected area
Nature
This site of Community importance occupies 1,109 hectares of the municipality, somewhat more than half its surface, and protects the stretch in which the Alhama cuts limestone cliffs between Soria and La Rioja.
The market gardens of the Alhama
Food and drink
The lower altitude and the water of the river allow here vegetable gardens and fruit trees unthinkable in the rest of the Tierras Altas, with riverbank crops that supplied the villages of the sierra by means of muleteering.
