What to see and do in Magaña

Magaña
Village
Magaña is a town in the province of Soria, in Tierras Altas, in the northeast, next to the border with La Rioja, bathed by the río Alhama. It is dominated by the Magaña castle, from the 15th century, built around a 10th-century Berber tower overlooking the valley. Its origins are attributed to Christian resettlers, mainly Basques, who settled after the incursions of Almanzor and spread from here towards Ágreda; in the Middle Ages it formed the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Magaña, a lordship of the Marquis of Vadillo. It preserves the Gothic church of San Martín, from the 16th century, built over an earlier Romanesque hermitage, several ruined hermitages, a medieval necropolis from the 11th to the 14th centuries and the Barruso bridge, from the 16th century. It has 61 inhabitants.

Monument
A sixteenth-century Gothic church built over an earlier Romanesque hermitage; San Martín de Tours is the patron of the village, whose patroness is Nuestra Señora del Barruso, and its fabric presides over the houses below the castle.

Historical milestone
Head in the Middle Ages of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Magaña, in the eighteenth century the villa became a señorío of the Marquis of Vadillo, who was also the great owner of transhumant flocks in the comarca.
