What to see and do in Castilruiz

Castilruiz
Village
Castilruiz is a settlement of 170 residents situated at the foot of the Moncayo, in the district of the Tierra de Ágreda, beside the río Añamaza or Manzano, a tributary of the Alhama on the Mediterranean slope. The village, which belongs to the diocese of Osma, occupies a small rise beside an extensive dryland plain. On the fall of the Ancien Régime it was constituted as a municipality known as Castil-Ruiz y Granja de Conejares, within the district of Ágreda, and in the mid-19th century it absorbed into its municipal area that of Añavieja. Its 15th-century church of San Nicolás de Bari bears the arms of the Fuenmayor and Castejones families, and the municipal area also preserves several hermitages: that of Los Ulagares, that of the Virgen de Sopeña, that of San Roque and that of la Soledad, also known as de las Tres Marías at the foot of the Cruz.

Añavieja, the Annexed Village
Curiosity
In the mid-nineteenth century the municipality incorporated neighbouring Añavieja, and since then it has divided its barely 170 inhabitants between the two settlements, at the foot of the Moncayo and beside the river Añamaza.

Nature
This site of community importance occupies 817 hectares of the municipal district, a fifth of the municipality, and protects the cliffs and banks along which the Añamaza runs down towards the Alhama valley.
