Riofrío de Riaza
Village
Riofrío de Riaza is a village of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda, in Segovia, which at 1,312 meters of altitude is the highest town in the province; it sits on a small plateau below the Quesera pass, in the sierra de Ayllón, where the Riaza river is born, dammed next to the village by the Riofrío reservoir. It borders the Pedrosa beech forest, declared a World Heritage Site. With no clear documentation of its origins, probably from the 12th century and linked to livestock farming, it was given in 1286 by Sancho IV to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Fresno de Cantespino, separating it from Sepúlveda; in 1558 it passed into the hands of the Duke of Maqueda. It lived off the cultivation of seed potatoes. It has 29 inhabitants.
