Cerezo de Arriba
Village
Cerezo de Arriba is a Segovian village of about 119 inhabitants, in the Ochavo de la Sierra of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, on whose land lies the La Pinilla ski resort, in the sierra de Ayllón, near the pico del Lobo (2,274 m). Documented since 1192 as Cerezo de Suso, it merged in 1393 into a single council with neighboring Cerezuelo, and in 1564 Philip II exempted it from the jurisdiction of Sepúlveda and made it a town. On 30 March 1813, during the War of Independence, Juan Martín el Empecinado and the priest Merino forced a column of 2,000 Frenchmen to retreat here toward Somosierra. Its church preserves the Romanesque apse, with capitals of fantastic animals, beneath a Baroque tower.
