Castillejo de Mesleón
Village
Castillejo de Mesleón is a town in Segovia of about 119 inhabitants, head of the ochavo de la Sierra y Castillejo of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda. The Romans built farmhouses here in the floodplain of the río Serrano, and the territory was resettled during the Reconquest; the first documents place it in the 11th century, and the current name appears in the 13th, alluding to a castle of which no trace remains. The municipality grew by absorbing vanished hamlets, such as Aldibáñez and Santa Inés, and around 1850 Soto de Sepúlveda was added to it, today its hamlet; it reached 411 inhabitants around 1950. Its church of la Asunción, a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) since 1995, preserves Romanesque capitals with the Massacre of the Innocents and combats between warriors; its old forge is today a small museum.
