Cerezo de Abajo
Village
Cerezo de Abajo is a municipality of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, in the province of Segovia, with about 150 inhabitants, next to the A-1 motorway and the N-110 road toward Soria, in the transition between the sierra de Somosierra and the Castilian plateau. Its origin dates back to the mid-13th century, when it was called Cereso de Yuso; by royal order of 1846 it was joined with Mansilla, until then an independent municipality. At the end of the Civil War, the insurgent side set up the province's largest prisoner concentration camp on its land, which came to hold more than 5000 Republicans. It preserves the Gothic church of San Román Abad and the Romanesque church of San Marcos, and it is crossed by the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental. In June, the San Benito pilgrimage includes the Baile del Caramelo.
