Duruelo
Village
Duruelo is a settlement of about 172 inhabitants located in the valley of the río Duratón, in the Segovian district of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, within the former Ochavo de la Sierra y Castillejo. Although coins and ceramic remains document an earlier presence, the village is historically recorded following the Castilian resettlement of people who came from Duruelo in Soria, according to the Cartulario de Silos. On its land there were three deserted villages —Cobos, Sancho Fruela and Cabrerizos—, and for a time it had Mansilla, today part of Cerezo de Abajo, as a dependent hamlet. Its church of the Natividad de Nuestra Señora was declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection designation) on 24 September 1982; it holds an altarpiece by the so-called Master of Duruelo and several paintings by Alonso de Herrera.
