Castroserna de Abajo
Village
Castroserna de Abajo is a hamlet of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, in the province of Segovia, between the meseta de Sepúlveda and the sierra de Guadarrama, with 31 inhabitants. The San Juan river divides its outskirts into four quarters, and its municipal area holds Neolithic sites, Bronze Age remains and the remnants of a Roman road. Resettled during the Reconquista, it is recorded in 1247 as Castrosarna de Yuso, a name that distinguished it from its sister village Castroserna de Arriba; in 1559, by order of Philip II, it came under a lordship that in 1698 gave rise to the marquisate of Castroserna. Its Romanesque church of San Miguel preserves five blind arches of the arcaded gallery, and beside the river opens the Cueva Labrada, a rock-cut hermitage today inhabited by vultures.
