La Matilla
Village
La Matilla is a municipality in the province of Segovia (Castile and León), belonging to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Pedraza, situated at 1,082 meters of altitude on the road from Sepúlveda to Pedraza. Its name, a diminutive of “mata” (thicket), alludes to the tree scrub that once covered the area. With about 72 inhabitants, it preserves houses built on the rocks just as Pascual Madoz already described them in the mid-19th century, as well as the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen. The Camino de San Frutos runs through the village, and in August its festivities in honor of San Roque and the Assumption bring together championships of bolos, chito, rana, mus and tute along with the Matirock music festival.

Activity
Between 15 and 16 August La Matilla celebrates San Roque and the Assumption with traditional games of skittles, horseshoe and rana, and with the Matirock, a music festival that gathers the residents of the whole comarca.

Historical milestone
The village, which in the mid-nineteenth century had some 132 houses raised on rock and lived off cereal and flax mills, constituted itself as a municipality of its own on separating from Valleruela de Pedraza in 1857.
