What to see and do in Orejana

Orejana
Village
Orejana is a municipality of about 61 inhabitants in Segovia, made up of five villages —El Arenal, seat of the town hall, Sanchopedro, Revilla, Orejanilla and La Alameda— which have maintained a legal union documented since the 14th century. Its name comes from Aureliana, after Aurelia, mother of the emperor Trajan, to whom tradition attributes some Roman remains found in Orejanilla. Next to Revilla stands the Romanesque church of San Juan Bautista, near where the old settlement of Orejana once stood; it also preserves the church of the Santo Espíritu and the ermitas of San Ramón Nonato and San Gregorio. A local legend recalls a girl from Sanchopedro who died devoured by wolves after losing her doll on the way to school, at the fork in the road known today as «la muñeca».
Church of San Juan Bautista de Sanchopedro
Monument
In the hamlet of Sanchopedro a Romanesque church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist is preserved; the municipality also has the church of the Holy Spirit and traces of Roman occupation around Orejanilla. Built in the last years of the Romanesque period, between the 12th century and the early 13th, next to an old quarry near the district of la Revilla, it is a first-rate example of Castilian Romanesque and today houses the municipal cemetery. The present building reflects three phases: the chancel, the oldest part; the transverse arches of the 16th and 17th centuries; and the porch and tower, from the 18th. The porch, carved in limestone, brings together one of the richest sculptural ensembles of Segovian Romanesque, with eight round arches on paired columns and capitals of great interest.
The five villages of Orejana
Curiosity
Orejana is not one village but five: Sanchopedro, Revilla, El Arenal, Orejanilla and La Alameda, each with its own festival spread between March and October and all of them together adding up to a little over sixty inhabitants.
The legend of the doll
Curiosity
A local tale warns of the danger of walking alone in the countryside: a girl from Sanchopedro died when she went back to look for a doll lost between two settlements, and since then that crossroads has been called la muñeca.
