What to see and do in Carrascal del Río

Carrascal del Río
Village
A town of the Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda, in Segovia, with about 143 inhabitants; its southern part belongs to the Hoces del Duratón nature reserve, with the Burgomillodo reservoir, which takes its name from the homonymous village, and the hermitage of San Frutos, where the trail of the same name ends. The territory was resettled during the Reconquest within the Ochavo de las Pedrizas y Valdenavares, and in 1558 Philip II sold the lordship to Antonio de Luna y Valois, lord of Fuentidueña, who turned it into an entailed estate for a son of his second marriage. Besides the church of Our Lady of the Assumption, it preserves traditional underground cellars dug next to the village centre.
Priory of San Frutos
Monument
The priory of San Frutos stands on one of the bends of the Duratón river gorges, in the heart of the Hoces del Río Duratón natural park, of which it is the most visited spot. The Romanesque church, today a hermitage and the main surviving building of the complex, was begun in 1093 and consecrated in 1100; it has a single nave eight metres long, a semicircular apse and fourteen capitals carved with plant and mythological motifs. The rest of the priory fell into ruin following its disentailment and a fire in the 19th century. From the edge of the cliff, one can take in the canyon carved by the river and the still waters of the Burgomillodo reservoir, with griffon vultures on the opposite wall. The Camino de San Frutos, a pilgrimage route of about 80 kilometres from Segovia, ends at this bend. Declared a national monument in 1931.
The Cuchillada de San Frutos (the knife cut)
Curiosity
A natural crack cuts through the rocky spur on which the priory of San Frutos stands, on a bend of the Duratón river gorges, in the very heart of the Hoces del Río Duratón natural park and its most visited spot; it made it necessary to build a stone bridge in 1757. Legend says the saint opened it with his staff to stop the Saracens and protect the people of Sepúlveda who had taken refuge with him. From the edge of the cliff one can look out over the canyon formed by the river and the still waters of the Burgomillodo reservoir, and it is a notable spot for birdwatching, especially of the griffon vultures that nest on the opposite wall. The Camino de San Frutos, a pilgrimage route of about 80 kilometres starting from Segovia, ends at this same bend.
