Priory of San Frutos Monument · Carrascal del Río, Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Sepúlveda, Segovia The priory of San Frutos stands on one of the bends of the Duratón river gorges, in the heart of the Hoces del Río Duratón natural park, of which it is the most visited spot. The Romanesque church, today a hermitage and the main surviving building of the complex, was begun in 1093 and consecrated in 1100; it has a single nave eight metres long, a semicircular apse and fourteen capitals carved with plant and mythological motifs. The rest of the priory fell into ruin following its disentailment and a fire in the 19th century. From the edge of the cliff, one can take in the canyon carved by the river and the still waters of the Burgomillodo reservoir, with griffon vultures on the opposite wall. The Camino de San Frutos, a pilgrimage route of about 80 kilometres from Segovia, ends at this bend. Declared a national monument in 1931.
