What to see and do in Rebollo

Rebollo
Village
Rebollo is a village of about 70 inhabitants in the former Community of Town and Land of Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, which in the mid-13th century was known as Oter de Rebollo for standing on a promontory. Its name recalls the rebollo, Quercus pyrenaica, of which a small wood still remains on the slopes of the Segovian sierra. It lives from agriculture, with a chickpea crop cited by Pascual Madoz in the 19th century and renowned in the area. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción holds a carved stone baptismal font from the 12th century. On the outskirts, near the deserted settlement of Valle Encinas, the Romanesque ermita of las Nieves was consolidated, with capitals of animal and plant motifs, declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico (a former Spanish heritage protection category, precursor to today's BIC) in 1982 after centuries in ruins.
Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves
Monument
A Romanesque hermitage of three naves with capitals of plant and animal motifs, already ruined in the nineteenth century; its declaration as a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) in 1982 made it possible to consolidate what remained standing.
The chickpeas of Rebollo
Food and drink
The growing of chickpeas is the municipality's agricultural hallmark and was already cited by Pascual Madoz in his nineteenth-century dictionary, alongside cereal, in a municipal district of fourteen square kilometres situated at 988 metres of altitude.
The Pyrenean oaks that give the village its name
Nature
The place name comes from the rebollo, Quercus pyrenaica, and patches of this oak still remain around the promontory that in the thirteenth century was called Oter de Rebollo, today occupied by the settlement.
