What to see and do in Arcones

Arcones
Village
Arcones is a municipality of about 179 inhabitants spread across several districts of the Community of Town and Land of Pedraza, Segovia, 41 kilometres from the capital; its municipal area extends over the western slope of the Montes Carpetanos, between 990 and 1,861 metres, with the village itself at 1,153. Its name comes from the Latin arcone, 'boundary or landmark', already documented in 1247. Besides Arcones, the municipality includes the hamlets of Arconcillos, Huerta, Castillejo and La Mata, and has lost other settlements now vanished, such as La Anduela, of which a legend tells that it was depopulated when a gecko slipped into the water served at a wedding. Its church of San Miguel is one of the oldest in the Community; the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental droving route passes through the municipal area, from whose shepherds it inherited the caldereta stew.

In 1901 several tombs cut into the stone were discovered in the Castillejo field, an indication that in medieval times the place had a greater economic and social importance than at present; the village is documented from 1247.
The shepherds' caldereta (lamb stew)
Food and drink
The characteristic dish is lamb caldereta, inherited from the shepherds who went up and down the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental, which crosses the municipal district on its way to the pastures of the sierra.
Fair of ganado de junio
Activity
On the third Saturday of June Arcones holds its livestock fair, heir to the gatherings that brought together the dealers of the sierra; in August, between the 15th and the 24th, the village also organises its cultural week.
The peaks of Arcones
Nature
The municipal district climbs from the settlement to heights of 1,858 metres on the divide with the Comunidad de Madrid, in the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama, a territory of high pastures historically tied to transhumant stock raising.
