What to see and do in Torrecaballeros

Torrecaballeros
Village
Torrecaballeros is a municipality in the province of Segovia that also includes Cabanillas del Monte, Aldehuela and La Torre, located 11 kilometres from the capital, on the western slope of the Sierra de Guadarrama, with part of its municipal area within the national park. Cited in 1247 as Oter de Caballeros, a name already fixed as Torrecaballeros by 1759, it was an obligatory passage for transhumance along the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental and a village of stockbreeders, woodcutters and shepherds. With about 1,500 inhabitants, it preserves the Romanesque church of San Nicolás de Bari, two farrier's frames and its old flax-retting pools.
Oter de Caballeros
Historical milestone
The village is documented in 1247 under the name Oter de Caballeros, the knights' knoll, and did not take its present form until 1759; it lived off transhumance along the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental and off the exploitation of the woodland.
The flax-retting pools of La Aldehuela
Curiosity
In La Aldehuela the old pits where flax was retted have been restored, alongside two farrier's stocks preserved in the municipality: an ethnographic ensemble that recalls the trades of a village of shepherds and woodcutters.

Nature
The municipal district climbs from 1,080 to 2,050 metres and part of it lies within the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park; its pastures are dotted with thyme and lavender, and the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Pedernal presides over the landscape.
